2015
Golden Arrow Award - Arwyp

Arwyp Timeline

A paediatric ICU opens on the 8th floor of the main building in September 2015 and includes three ICU isolation beds, three high care isolation beds and private suites for five young patients and one of their parents. Facilities run at a negative pressure to ensure the safest possible environment for nursing diseases such as TB and gastro-enteritis.

Theatre back-of-house

In July 2015 the new theatre back-of-house (formerly the old theatre complex) is completed. A linking walkway is opened between the new theatre complex in the South building and the old complex which now house offices and equipment needed to support the theatres. More space is now available for theatre stock to be easily available. The extended area also houses a clinical engineer’s workshop, change-rooms and a staff tea room.

On 27 March 2015 Arwyp receives a Discovery Award for Excellence (DEAN) quarterly award. Three Arwyp nurses are also acknowledged for their hard work when they are presented with awards for outstanding performance.

Arwyp Timeline

In November 2014 the new ICU is officially opened. The facility consists of a medical and a surgical unit and includes separate cubicles and a system where doctors can monitor patients’ vital signs from home using their ipads. The unit has added facilities such as isolation facilities giving patients more privacy. Other new features include hand hygiene stations, the upgrading of mechanical ventilation and filtration and provisions for disposal of hazardous materials to lower infection rates and mortality.

During the renovations to the hospital in 2014 two whole floors are added to the South Wing building in order to make up a brand new theatre complex comprising eleven theatres with facilities to rival any in the country. The premises are opened on 16 April 2014.

A new and improved Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) is officially approved by the Department of Health and opened on 10 February 2014.

Arwyp is presented with the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) Award for Excellence at a function in 2006 attended by the Minister of Health for introducing new technique on spinal surgery to SA and with third place in the HASA Marketing section in 2007 for the hospital’s involvement with the Siamese twins

In 2006 the three ‘Beetge properties’ on the eastern side between the main building and the Arwyp Medical Suites building are bought for future expansion of wards and the theatre complex.

In 2004 the Blockhouse building on the western side is purchased and converted into doctors consulting rooms and an Occupational Health Clinic.

2003

In 2003 Arwyp is ISO 9001:2000 graded, the first hospital in Africa to receive this certification and to then to achieve recertification (2006 & 2008)

In 2003 the five story office block on the hospital’s Eastern side, previously known as the Kempen Building, is purchased to house the growing demand for doctors’ consulting rooms, the 4 Med Nursing Agency, Arwyp Training Institute, Dialysis Unit, Out-patients Department and Clinical Research Centre.  It is subsequently known as the Arwyp Medical Suites.

2002

Arwyp Timeline

In 2002 the administration and management departments are moved to the refurbished Langtree Court building later known as the Arwyp Customer Support Centre.

2001

In 2001 Arwyp achieves a NOSA 5 star grading.

2000

In 2000 a parking stand on the Western side (subsequently known as Pine Parking) is bought to satisfy the increasing demand for parking space.

In 2000 the double story block of flats, previously known as Langtree Court, is bought to house the management team and administration departments.

1996

Arwyp Timeline

The National Hospital Network (NHN) a group of privately owned, independent hospitals in South Africa is founded in 1996 with the purpose of representing the collective interests of its members and negotiating with common stake holders. NHN is sometimes described as South Africa’s ‘fourth hospital group,’ in recognition of its 20% market share in terms of beds in the private hospital sector. Arwyp is the flagship member of the NHN. The group is led by Arwyp's CEO.

In 1993 the maternity ward is opened on the 3rd floor.

1992

Arwyp Timeline

In 1992 due to increasing market share and expansion of the hospital, the property on the Southern side is acquired and a 4 story building erected to house the radiology department with both CAT and MRI scanners, as well as doctors' consulting rooms.

The hospital initially occupies only the 5th, 6th and 7th floors housing administration wards and theatre. Before long the entire building is used with wards on every floor and the 9th and 10th floor used for doctors and administration. In 1989 Dr Wypkema and Mr. Arendsen buy out Mr F. Wypkema and Mr. Langerak and change the name to Arwyp Medical Centre.

Arwyp Timeline

Arwyp, a privately-owned hospital, is established in 1985 and opens its doors to the public in 1986. It is initially known as Kempton Park Hydromed. The founding shareholders were Dr W Wypkema, Mr. PJKM Arendsen, Mr. F Wypkema and Mr. J. Langerak.
